2021.04.19 07:34 foomanbaz For those whose root of faith is weak, the final day will never come - Linji

For many, the word "faith" means unfounded belief, or a weak form of belief, and nothing more.
Like many words, there is really another sense to it. In what sense do you have faith in a person? That isn't some lack luster conviction in their existence. It is a kind of knowledge, the strongest statement you can make because you can't claim to know how they will react to anything in particular, not exactly. This sense of faith is something closer to trust. It is not some half-baked weak form of knowledge. It is something between you and the person.
This is the faith that comes into play in Zen--between you and the Unborn, and it is not some half-baked weak belief in the "existence" of it.
If your root of faith is weak, the final day will never come.

2021.04.19 07:34 nofreepie I forgot I enabled autotune... for 5 years! Also, should I enable persistent L2ARC?

The story is 6 or 7 years ago I was given a modest DIY FreeNAS running some 8.x version. My learning curve began when I had to manually upgrade to 9.x. Performance was poor and soon I would learn to disable the onboard Realtek junk and add an Intel NIC. But along the way, trying to find performance, I enabled autotune. I may have tested on vs off on the Intel NIC but I don't really recall, for whatever reason I left it on and forgot about it.
Fast forward, today I applied U3 and looking at the release notes, known issues, persistent L2ARC disabled by default, prompted me to look at tunables to see if maybe that variable was set, it wasn't. This prompted me to recall where autotune is enabled under system-advanced, and looking at the help bubble is a Warning: autotune is only used as a temporary measure. A little web searching reveals I shouldn't be running autotune. I'm no longer on that original hardware and my current stuff is much more performant so I've disabled autotune.
My storage pools are 3TB and 4TB mirrors, ram is DDR3 16GB. Should I enable persistent L2ARC?

2021.04.19 07:34 ManWitCat Are there people actually using the helium network?

I'm specifically talking about using the network not mining. I know lorawan is used commercially for private networks but are there companies or products that are actually use the helium network specifically? How difficult would it be to take an off the shelf lorawan sensor and make it run on the helium network?

2021.04.19 07:34 flatcologne Buprenorphine for chronic pain?

Hi, I have chronic neurological pain (Akathisia, specifically) that is very severe from a reaction to medication. I’m due to be moved from conventional opiates (Targin) to Buprenorphine or Suboxone, due to my country having restrictions around opiates - should I expect this new drug to go alright?

2021.04.19 07:34 dhou25 How do pandemic travel restrictions work in Canada?

I've heard that interprovincial travel has been banned (even intraprovincial?) as well as the formation of an Atlantic bubble for the Maritime provinces. How does this work? Are the borders sealed? Is there the infrastructure for doing so? For context, I'm coming from the states and I find this interesting. It would be very difficult for example to seal off New York from New Jersey or CA from Oregon and would likely be contested as unconstitutional in blocking freedom of movement. How does this work then? Is it a hard border?

2021.04.19 07:34 Ray2o12 Story time: I think I scared off an INFP during a date

Reason for posting: I thought it'd do me some good to get this off my head and possibly help someone not make my mistake.
I'm a Pre pandemic, about 1 year 6 ago, I felt a tad bit lonely & signed upon dating apps. It was a painful process, to weed out a lot of poor profiles knowing that I probably won't even get a single match, just because the male vs female ratio.
To my surprise, I got a match an OkCupid & I started talking to her. She vented about her issues on the dating app ( to her swiping part felt like playing Russian Roulette), anyway we talked a bit more & I asked her out. To meet at a cafe.
Keep in mind, This is my first time going on a date. We met & started talking. She felt comfortable talking about her family, she said her mother was a bit manipulative & she wasn't happy about it.
Here's where I screwed up: instead of just listening to how she felt, I being a smart ass decided to explain how manipulation worked & gave her tips on how she could be more manipulative, to make her life a lot easier.
I think you can figure out the rest, conversation didn't progress much & I've decided it's time to leave after 10 mins. She decided to follow me on social media ( I used to post memes on IG) but she never felt comfortable talking to me again, gotta admit I've painted myself red flags and I deserved it.
Never been on another date since & I'd be glad to hear your stories/feedback on dating.

2021.04.19 07:34 McFrogDude Soapbox: Shadow monk is a bad 3 level dip for Rogues.

I'm sure many of you read the title and thought, "no shit." But I've been replaying a conversation in my head for the past week, and I need to shout before I tear my teeth out one by one.
A week ago, the question of our Rogue/Monk's multiclass choice came up in our group. The rest of us had all stuck 6 levels in one class, whilst they had gone 4/2 Shadow Monk/Rogue (or Assassin/Monk, I don't read character sheets.) I believed it was a silly multiclass, but another player claimed that Shadow Monk was a decent option for multiclassing Rogues. At the time, my social ineptitude and passive nature led me to quietly agree and move on, but as time went on, I realized just how fucking wrong they were.
Rule 0: Fun > Function Yes, the player is having fun (I think) with their multiclass. If they want to change, the option is there any time. At the end of the day, DnD is about having fun, and if everyone is having fun; what's the problem?
What a Rogue gains from Monk To start, I'll quote what the other player believed is the reason you'd multiclass: the Shadow Monk spells. At 3rd level, you gain access to all these spells:

All of these are great for sneaking around, and Shadow Monk is the only way you'd get all 4 at once, as all but Darkvision are on mutually exclusive spell lists. Only caveats are; you're 3 levels into Monk- and 3 levels behind Rogue or any other class- and you only cast one of these per short rest. Keep in mind, to get these you had to take these features:
  1. Unarmored Defense: Your Wisdom needs to be 16 or higher to provide greater benefit than Studded Leather. Fine if you lose your armor or in the mythical high-level campaigns, but will likely not come up in standard tiers of play.
  2. Martial Arts: Although this does not affect ranged weapons, monk weapons are not finesse weapons. Sneak Attack specifically states it requires finesse or ranged weapons to function (PHB pg. 96) whilst Martial Arts only allows you to use Dexterity instead of Strength for attack and damage rolls (PHB pg. 78.) Since it does not explicitly grant Finesse, your non-daggenon-shortsword attacks can't grant Sneak Attack, the Rogue's main source of damage. Moreover, Sneak Attack can only trigger once per turn, meaning if the unarmed strikes could trigger Sneak Attack, it would be worthless unless the first attack already missed.
  3. Ki: As a rogue, the only feature that is worthwhile from Ki is Patient Defense, dodging as a bonus action. Everything else is either covered by your Cunning Action, which requires no resources, or is an unarmed strike, which does not proc Sneak Attack.
  4. Unarmored Movement: +10 feet of movement if you're not wearing armor. Arguably the strongest feature you get at 2nd level.
Regardless of what level of Rogue you're multiclassing from, you're always giving up 1 or 2 of your sneak attack dice and 3 class features, or 2 class features and an ASI. For 4 spells, that you can cast one of once per short rest.
My point is that it's not a very eloquent multiclass. You don't usually multiclass Sorceror and Wizard; there's too much overlap and stat stretching that only hurts your character in the long run. While you could solve many issues by continuing to level up Monk, that only works in Tier 3 and beyond. If you're sitting at Rogue 2/Shadow Monk 6, why not just play a full Shadow Monk?
I posit that if you're going to go with a 3 level dip in a Rogue, pick a caster. Go Armorer for magic items, permanent advantage on stealth checks, and Booming Blade. Go Warlock for Devil's Sight, Darkness, and Booming Blade. Go Wizard for ritual spells, Silent Image, and Booming Blade. Go Sorceror and abuse Subtle Spell! Go Druid and abuse Pass Without Trace! You have 4 1st level spell slots and 2 2nd level spell slots!
You have options! Just not Shadow Monk!
What a Not Rogue gains from Monk Slightly back on track; Rogues don't benefit from a Shadow monk multiclass. I'd like to believe I made that point somewhere in that wall of text. I could spew a bunch of hot air about why that might be, but the abridged might just be that Monks suck. 9 times out of 10, I believe multiclassing into Monk is akin to handicapping yourself; trading your next level of spells or class ability or more for the ability to do 1d4 non-magical bludgeoning damage as a bonus action after attacking. The only class to truly benefit from Monk are Druids, to gain 16 AC without a shield, the one weakness the class has when it isn't a rampaging bear.
TL;DR Greg, you're wrong, Rogues should multiclass into anything but Shadow Monks, Monks suck at low levels.

2021.04.19 07:34 BuenaT Can I determine if I have Hungarian or Romani ancestry?

Both the Austrian and "Hungarian" sides of my family are from Burgenland in what is now Austria. There has always been a sort of family lore about the Hungarian arm actually being Romani. My question is, is there any way I could either prove or dispell this? As far as I can tell that arm of my family is extinct in terms of the surname, which is strangely German sounding. They were also, atleast according to my Grandma, a misfit bunch who were very dodgey about discussing heritage.
Could a test help? I would imagine either Hungarian or Romani heritage could show Central Asian DNA but IDK
Thanks for the help!

2021.04.19 07:34 Whisky-Baby15 Mom has horrendous taste in movies

This is not like, a huge issue but I would like to be tactful.
Basically, I have been visiting my parents for nearly a month now, I adore them, it's been wonderful.
I just have one issue - my mom has horrible taste in movies... Like, really bad. She loves thrillers and horrors but picks the worst ones, she says we will change the movie if it is crap but we end up sitting through the entire thing even when it is obvious that the movie is garbage.
I have no idea how to tactfully remove myself from the situation, I stick through it because I want to spend time with her and be respectful but recently and I am getting more and more frustrated trying to sit through a bad movie. I don't want to hurt her feelings but I also do not like wasting 2 hours of my life at a time.
Any thoughts on how to get myself out of watching terrible 2-hour horrothrillers with my mom?

2021.04.19 07:34 Askin_MrBrooks Rip-off Products

So I’m a newbie with riding, but I’ve obviously been looking up a few accessories to use. Pedals, helmet, and lines for example, and I always look at reviews, and I think it’s nuts that some people are MAD that a company sells the same thing for cheaper.
Like idk, I’m an American and would love to by an American product.
But I think it’s insane that some people defend an American company, that makes their product in China for cheap, and then over-sells it because it’s brand-name, vs a product who sells it for almost face value somewhere else. Like who’s being more sketch here?
My main example that brought this up is apparently “raceface” makes some plastic pedals and a Chinese company makes the exact same quality pedals, out of the exact same material, but sells it cheaper.

2021.04.19 07:34 mustbefreee Don't Tread On Me

I have a background in retail management before working at CVS. I took a pay cut to be a Shift Supervisor at CVS and was SM after two years. Like any corporate retailer, CVS will use and exploit the talents of it's workers while keeping them underpaid, unskilled and with no voice. Meanwhile CVS needs talented managers. What you have to do is use CVS the same way it uses you. If you have the opportunity to lead a team in a challenging environment, DO IT! Take the opportunity to build your resume and grow as a leader, even if it's challenging. Use the company the same way it uses you, and when the time is right move on to something better. Don't be a victim.

2021.04.19 07:34 IndependentNarrow689 Super stressed and I do not know what to do

For background info, I am the oldest in my family plus I am 1st gen. I come from a middle class home in TX. I do decently well in school.
The reason why I am super stressed is because I have recently started practicing for the SAT and I got a score of 1150 with no prior studying and I just realized the school is providing me with a free SAT in a week.
I got a 590 on reading and writing and a 560 in mathematics.
On the SAT math portion, there were a lot of questions I had to skip mainly because I did not even know how to solve them anyway.
I just have no clue where to start.
Should I buy college panda? should I do kahn academy first? Erica Meltzer?
The majority of my friends have a score in the 1300-1400 range and are saying that they are not going to try the SAT anymore and are pretty content with their scores.
How did y'all improve? sorry for the rambling I just realized how little time I have left till college admissions.
