2021.05.06 11:20 hjsteg Using memory to plot?

Regarding the large amount of data to be written creating a signe plot. To my understanding to create one single 100 Gb plot file will generate 1.6 Tb writes, thus reducing the usable life of a SSD. With consumer SSD's having maybe from 200TBW (Terabytes written) lifespan and up, this is a real issue, and may (or may no) come as a surprise to the user.
Then, here is my question. If you have a computer with huge amounts of ram, say 384Gb, would it be possible to do the write intensive plotting on the computers memory (what we called ram-disk before SSD's became common)? Anyone doing this?

I'm getting a segmentation fault when i run the program. I am suspicious of my load function so it is pasted separately. (I'll post the entire code below)

bool load(const char *dictionary) { // TODO FILE *dict = fopen(dictionary,"r"); if (dict == NULL) { return false; } char buffer[LENGTH]; while(fgets(buffer, LENGTH+1, dict) != NULL) { node *x = malloc(sizeof(node)); if(x == NULL) { fclose(dict); return false; } strcpy(x->word,buffer); int index = hash(buffer); if(table[index] == NULL) { table[index]->next = x; x->next = NULL; } else { x->next = table[index]; table[index] = x; } } fclose(dict); return true; }
Full code dictionary.c
// Implements a dictionary's functionality #include  #include  #include  #include  #include  #include "dictionary.h" // Represents a node in a hash table typedef struct node { char word[LENGTH + 1]; struct node *next; } node; // Number of buckets in hash table const unsigned int N = 17576; // Hash table node *table[N] = {NULL}; //https://stackoverflow.com/questions/13293226/initializing-array-element-to-null // Returns true if word is in dictionary, else false bool check(const char *word) { // TODO node *check; for(int i = 0;i < N; i++) { check = table[i]; while(check != NULL) { if(strcmp(check->word,word) == 0) { return true; } check = check->next; } } return false; } // Hashes word to a number unsigned int hash(const char *word) { // TODO int a = (int)(word[2] - 'a'); int b = 26*(int)(word[1] - 'a'); int c = 26*26*(int)(word[0] - 'a'); return a + b + c; } // Loads dictionary into memory, returning true if successful, else false bool load(const char *dictionary) { // TODO FILE *dict = fopen(dictionary,"r"); if (dict == NULL) { return false; } char buffer[LENGTH]; while(fgets(buffer, LENGTH+1, dict) != NULL) { node *x = malloc(sizeof(node)); if(x == NULL) { fclose(dict); return false; } strcpy(x->word,buffer); int index = hash(buffer); if(table[index] == NULL) { table[index]->next = x; x->next = NULL; } else { x->next = table[index]; table[index] = x; } } fclose(dict); return true; } // Returns number of words in dictionary if loaded, else 0 if not yet loaded unsigned int size(void) { // TODO int count = 0; node* check; for(int i = 0; i < N; i++) { check = table[i]; while(check != NULL) { check = check->next; count++; } } return count; } // Unloads dictionary from memory, returning true if successful, else false bool unload(void) { // TODO node *check,*n; for(int i = 0; i < N; i++) { check = table[i]; n = NULL; while(check != NULL) { n = check->next; free(check); check = n; } } return true; }

2021.05.06 11:20 cosmonautdavid Why do MMP systems still use FPTP?

There’s a huge round of local elections in the UK today, three of which (London Assembly, Scottish Parliament and Welsh Senedd) use a regional variant on MMP called AMS.
(If you don’t know what MMP is, it’s my understanding that you get one vote that functions like a regular FPTP vote for your local seat/constituency/riding/district etc. and a supplementary party vote for “top-up” list seats that make the overall result more proportional.)
My question is this: if you still want local representation, why settle for FPTP? Surely you could implement ranked-choice voting or STV for local seats and still use the party vote (which, again, can be entirely divorced from whoever you choose for local representation, no matter how many preferences you put down) as a metric for how the general population want the overall results to look?
Is this a really stupid question? Am I missing something? Bearing in mind I live in England and we’ve never had any form of proportional representation here so there’s still much I’m hazy on.

2021.05.06 11:20 s-creaseypg How large is too large for react entry point?

I'm working on a project that incorporates firebase messaging and react-bootstrap. I've used code-splitting on some routes and have managed to get the entry point bundle down to 690kb. The webpack warning flags at 244kb, but importing fcm and bootstrap.min.css are weighing the bundle down quite significatly. Is 690kb still ok for an entry point size or is there any way to remove either of these dependencies from the entry point?

2021.05.06 11:20 PaperAffectionate683 Advice for a loner?

24F. I do not feel happy with where I am in my life right now. I have no friends online or IRL, and basically no workplace collegues since I'm the only employee and I feel like the age difference between me and my boss is too big for us to be friends. I hate my job and have a lot if stress because of it but I'm too afraid to change it. Everyday after work I switch between 'I'm so tired so I must sleep all day' to feeling guilty about wasting my time and not doing something with my life, because I know it's important to remember that only I am the source of my own problems. I live with my mom and around every week I have this some sort of mental breakdown where I tell her all the problems and stresses I have at work and after this I feel very guilty for burdening her with my own problems. It would propably be better if I had some friends but I actually hate that longing feeling for human contact we all have in us, often I wish I could be content with my life completely alone but I know it's not possible. I never really had close friends, only meeting with others at school, and I never understood why and how would my classmates meet with people outside our class, and now I don't even know how to do it and I don't really want to either. Overall I feel really stressed and fed up with my life and would love to change it somehow but I just don't want to keep pushing myself because I got to the point that I have to force myself to do every single thing I do including the most basic things like earing or showering. Sorry if it's chaotic I just needed to get it out. I hope this is the right sub for this
