2021.05.10 06:33 VinesNFluff Books are entirely obsolete and the only reason we are clinging to them is people's emotions.

I don't mean "text" or "literature" or "written media". That's stupid. Writing is still the best way to transfer actual knowledge (science and shit), never topped by any "fancier" media, and some forms of storytelling are not viable if not with written word.
I mean the actual medium of the tome. The codex. A stack of paper bound together by a combination of fabric, glue, and more paper. Wrapped around in a cover to keep the pages safe. The format we call "a book". That -- Can go die.
Digital writing is the way of the future. It is better in every way that matters.
Point 1: It is more compact. Books are heavy summunbitches. They are thick and blocky and just generally take up a lot of space. To have a big collection of books you enjoy if they are printed means a lot of space. Like a lot of space. A single electronic device can hold an entire public library's worth of books and then some.
Point 2: It is better for studying. When you're just reading a story, thumbing from page 1 through to page 300 linearly is just natural and like, that's how you do it. When you're studying, whether because you're writing a sciencey paper or whatever, you generally don't read the book linearly. Instead you jump around, you thumb back to reference a previous bit of information, you copy notes. All of this takes an ungodly amount of work on a printed book, but can be done within a few clicks on an electronic publication. Jumping around the document, copying things from it, finding a specific bit. Etc.
And like, this is something that is hardly taken advantage of because the medium hasn't matured quite yet, but with digital files, cross-referencing can be as easy as highlighting a word. An embryo of this can be seen in some reader apps that will lookup dictionary definitions and wiki articles when you highlight words -- But it could go way further and be way better with some ingenuity.
Point 3: It is more democratic. More people can publish their ideas without going through a filter. "But digital only publications are mostly shit", I hear you type. Stop typing it. I KNOW. I AGREE. But that's the conundrum of freedom: Once you give freedom to people, they'll use it for shit. Well actually first they'll use it to be horny, then they'll use it to be horrible to each other, THEN they'll use it for derivative shit. That is true of any freedom, including the freedom to publish on your own. That doesn't mean freedom is a bad thing. Having common individuals having more access to the means of communication will never be a net negative... And lest we forget the metric tonne of shit that managed to get through traditional publishing on the back of the author having connectionstm
Point 3.5 -- Not a full point because I actually am not 100% on this one It might be better for the environment? I say 'might' because as long as we are stuck with dirty energy generation, it won't be, not really. It'll be on the same level to paper or worse. But if you live somewhere with full green energy (I do :D), then yes, reading on an electronic device is better for the environment.
Point 3.66 -- This one is just really minor but It pays for itself? The cost of entry for reading eBooks in a comfortable manner is steep and sounds phucking insane when compared to a pocket-sized paperback... But the books themselves are much cheaper! So if you read a lot (which I do!), eventually you realise you're saving money, because you're not paying for the paper and stuff.
Point 4: A lot of the major issues with eBooks aren't really "eBook problems" so much as symptoms of broader problems DRM is a shit and not actually owning the media you buy is bollocks. DRM is also not an inherent problem of digitally published media. Rather it is a problem of the society where this media happened to be invented (read: Corporate Capitalism). But yanno, when tomes became the defacto way of storing written word, they were copied by hand and held by tight-knit aristocracies who believed that "common folk" reading them would spell absolute disaster. This wasn't a problem with tomes, it was a problem with the society that birthed them.
The same thing goes for the price problem. YES a smartphone is expensive, let alone a dedicated device that does nothing but display books (cuz eInk good). NO, not everyone can afford it yet. But the keyword here is 'yet', and unlike DRM, this isn't something that can never be solved within this social system. Capitalism itself has a tendency to cheapen things once they cease being novel and continue being mass-produced. TV's were once an unthinkable luxury for the mega-rich, and nowadays you have to be really broke to not have one.
Point 4.4: Another one I'm not 100% on. I've also heard that like, it's too easy to get distracted when reading an eBook. And to that I say: Take the word of someone with actual ADHD when I say that this is not the eBook's fault. Because it is very much not. If you are to be distracted, the world is an endless source of distractions, whether it is the internet or the meatspace. Focussing on things only requires basic discipline, which admittedly is something I struggle with myself.
I will however admit that Social Media being designed (like, by actual design with teams of scientists tweaking it to be as efficient at it as possible) as an endless timesink, it does become very easy to just fall down the social media hole and not come back. But again, this is not a problem with eBooks. It is a problem with Social Media, the companies who make it, and broader social trends.
Point 5: Aside from ones already cited above, all other arguments I hear for the superiority of the codex seem to be emotion-based Which is fine, really. Like, seriously, it's fine. Like, I myself have no attachment to paper books. I like reading, not books... But my dumb ass still collects floppy disks because I like the ka-chunk noises they make and feel that no other computer peripheral has ever matched them. This, however, is a feeling. I'm not about to tell people they should drop their USB Flash Drives and just use a floppy drive for everything because that would be nucking futs.
If the smell of a newly bought book, the feel of the paper crinkling under your fingers, and the simplicity of curling up with a tome of dead wood is the kind of thing that makes you happy... Go crazy.
But like. The Tablet (not the -- Computery ones. Like actual Stone tablets) was abandoned because the Scroll was a better way to transfer written word. Then the Scroll was abandoned because the Codex was a better format. We still know about scrolls and tablets because, hey, they are kinda cool. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that somewhere out there there is a niche of hobbyists who carve words into stone tablets just for the coolness of it.
But yanno Digital Documents are just better than codexes for containing the written word, and embracing them could only make the whole experience better.

For my playstyle i like to use my supports abilities first, pop their skills and bursts, then swap to keqing for all the damage then swap back to supports once their cooldowns are done. Does either Mona or Xingqui work best with my playstyle?

2021.05.10 06:33 wuntuuthree Helmet For Texas Street Riding

Hi guys, I have a DR650 I plan on riding mostly on the street and at highway speeds. Wondering if you all have any helmet suggestions. To me quiet and aerodynamic are most important. I live in texas so some ventilation too if possible. But I'm open to any thoughts any of you might have.
Once I get comfortable on the bike I'll probably do more dirt riding- and I suppose I can get a separate helmet for that. But open to things in the middle too.

2021.05.10 06:33 kaiser_kerfluffy Current Leaver buster is messed up

The current system of applying leaver buster for any disconnects doesn't seem to ever account for the possibility you could have had connection issues
Its a much bigger issue if you live in a country where power supply has never been a guarantee. I'm stuck on 20 minute queue timer even though i don't have a history of afk'ing to troll. But i get It, people going afk needs to be discouraged, i get that
But why does the punishment apply to aram as well? I'm just not allowed to play any portion of the game without wasting half an hour and no way to appeal or wait it out, why riot?

2021.05.10 06:33 Sea_Variation4842 How long have you ridden in pdx, how have things changed in your opinion?

I had a conversation with someone who commuted in pdx back in 2005-10ish and was surprised to hear that things were better back then in regards to riding:
Less car traffic, considerably more bike ridership, basically similar infrastructure as now. I was not expecting to hear that (besides traffic), but I didn't ride back then so I have no point of reference.
So I'm curious, if you've ridden for a bit longer in pdx is this similar to your experience? What's changed for better or worse?

2021.05.10 06:33 Winchesterlx Words of comfort for the day...

Hi folks! So I was listening to a meditation video about death anxiety this morning, and the guy from the video quoted a sentence, which brought me comfort and gave my mind something to think about for today. I figured I'd share it, in hope that some of you, mighty also find it comforting even if it's for a day. “It is the secret of the world that all things subsist and do not die, but retire a little from sight and afterwards return again.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson (Here is the name of the video, in case someone wishes to try the meditation: Beyond Death - Guided Meditation - Release the Fear of Dying). I hope this could help at least one of you! Stay strong!

2021.05.10 06:33 2am_main So gently meows the cat (a short trilogy)

So gently meows the cat:
so gently meows the cat i leave in its home by the sea
i untie my boat and grab my oars,
and once again go out into the world
from which the small cat fears I may never return

So gently meows the cat II:

so softly purrs the cat
the cat i return to
my boat chipped and flooded
the oars long abandoned

so softly purrs the cat as I sit down next to it
I, the cat cannot be rid of
in a house, neither of us call home

So gently meows the cat |||:
So quietly hums the cat,
careful not to make a stir.
As I sit below with friends,
the cat dare not purr.

The cat is content,
our house is now home
the laughter is sweet
“come silly cat, get away from that broken boat”
